The Defense Of The Rheinland
A Multiplayer/Skrimish map for wh40k: Winter Assault

(9.July 2006)

This is a 2v2 map which is fairly large, it is suitable for all game types. Teams are seperated by 2 rivers and between the rivers lies a no mans land.

***INTRO/FLUFF

A Deadlock! For the Rheinland is the piece of land that separates the Kingdom of the Rhein from the hateful empire of the Kvars. 150 years ago there was a horrific war between the two powers, the war dragged on for 30 years and had devastated almost everything. Once resources and manpower became so depleted the battle between good and evil came to a mortifying halt as neither empire no longer had the means to carry out an effective war against one another and it was no longer in the best of interests of the two empires to continue such a shameful war in which was accomplishing nothing but the eternal suffering of their own people.

After the war the two empires decided to draw their boarders where the fighting had stopped and the strip of land that lays between the two boarders in which no empire possesses has now turned into an undesirable no mans land.

But as the years have grinded off since the end of the war, the empire of the Kvars have massed a sizeable force and have decided through their own impulsiveness to declare war and breakthrough the Rheinland, the people of the Rhein who have seemed to have forgotten the beastly outcomes of war are more then willing to defend their fatherland and to use this act of aggression as an excuse to put an end to the evil empire for once and for all

No Man's Land in the center... Overdone. Every map nowadays has them.

 #5 - Posted by: d_ano (Member) on 07-13-2006 at 17:25
yea the colours of all the objects dont go together i know that sounds dumb but it makes the map look bad and the green is to bright for a war game map it looks like a map from warcraft. maybe tone down some of the colours and make them match and it would be better but this isnt the best map i ever saw a lot of the objects are badly placed 4/10

 #6 - Posted by: sgt_socks (Member) on 07-13-2006 at 18:35
yeah, isn't the Rhineland in Germany?

 #7 - sorry double post - Posted by: sgt_socks (Member) on 07-13-2006 at 18:36
and wouldn't the Imperium take this place over, isnt't the entire galaxy either choas, imperial, ork or pherhaps an eldar world?

 #8 - Posted by: _7Swords (Member) on 07-13-2006 at 20:04
doesnt matter its a map, have fun with it and dont worry about the whole fluff. it really bothers me how seriously people take these things. ITS A FREAKING GAME HAVE FUN WITH IT.

Waaaghy. I'm not too sure on this map. I think you've used the same decal for the whole map (I've made this mistake before, and it wasn't nice frown). And I agree with #4, too many people have maps like this with a noman's land seperating the two bases. But...I'll give it a 5/10 because:
1. I like the country side (and your trying to defend it)smile
2. The effort you've put into it.

 #11 - Posted by: space_marine (Member) on 07-14-2006 at 11:58
tank blokers over done colours dnt go, looks quite rubbish

 #12 - Posted by: The_Void_Dragon (Member) on 07-14-2006 at 13:03
i like the effort you have put into this map, but i find the bridges being very restricting for tactical play as there is only a direct route into the enemy base

 #13 - Hmm - Posted by: Zany_Reaper (Member) on 07-14-2006 at 14:24
It looks as though there're custom decals in this map.
Has anyone been experiencing Pink Box issues?

If so, then Gator, please include the decals & other custom things too.

 #14 - Posted by: gatordh7 (Member) on 07-14-2006 at 17:09
#2 yes I know what the Rheinland is, and it's just a name

#12 no there is actually two routes, and on one set of bridges tanks can not cross, and on the other set of bridges tanks and infantry can cross

just dload the map and try it out, the colors appear to be a lot more colorfull in these screenshots then the map really is in-game

if you read the intro/fluff you will find out why the terrain colors are all different

"yeah, isn't the Rhineland in Germany?"

Well, the fluff actually sounds a lot like the end of the first world war, and then when the nazis broke the treaty of versailles and expanded like they did. just like in the map, there was a strip of land east of the river rhine in which no military was allowed.

and ya stole my maps name lol... "the defence of" part at least wink

 #21 - Posted by: gatordh7 (Member) on 07-28-2006 at 02:19
lol sorry Kais but I actually didn't steal your maps name because I haven't even seen your map before, but I'm sure there have been many other maps that have used "The Defense of" in the name of their maps, maybe not DOW maps but other maps, so technically speaking if I stole the name you also did smile

and by the way thanks Larkin 54 for the compliments, I actually just finished another map today, one that I started working on right after I made The Defense Of The Rheinland, so within the next few days/weeks it should be on Dowfiles big grin

#22 - Detailed Feedback - Posted by: SpookyRuben (Member) on 07-28-2006 at 03:45
Hi gatordh7, interesting map. Pretty good command of the toolset.

Checked your map out with a mate and in the editor. I don't want to sound harsh, but you got too much going on in the map man. The concept is good, and the general setting is nice, but just way too much stuff etc.. it seems like the editor got a bit carried away.

The not so good...

1. Excessive effects, if you dont have a fairly beefy machine you may have problems running this map.

2. Huge areas of play off limits, you could have gotten the same effect i.e 'Infanty only' with a few well placed models and a few touches with the passablility editor.

3. Lack of tactical openess, just go direct to other base (see comment 2)

The good...

1.It's not flat, which may not seem like a lot, but it really shows your putting an effort in to the map, could be a little smoother though.

2. Nice setting and good placement and joining of buildings etc... staircase by the relic for example.

3. Nice use of terrain to reward players who explore (semi-secret paths for example), but it's blunted by some of the negatives above.

Looking forward to your next map man, judging by the effort on this one. My only advice is "just enough...".

Peace Spook

Thanks Spook for the constructive feedback

And yes I do agree with you on all 3 points of the not so good stuff, I went a little crazy with the Artillery in the out of bounds area's, I'll never do that again, the pretty effects aren't worth the lag it creates at all.

Although I dont really understand how my map has a lack of tactical openess, and how other maps in DOW dont seem to have a lack of tactical openess. Like for example look at maps like Mortalis or Quatra, where you can pretty much just march your army right into the enemy's base without any disturbances from the terrain.

#24 - Follow up - Posted by: SpookyRuben (Member) on 07-28-2006 at 12:14
Hey gatordh7,

Regarding the comment I made about "lack of tactical openess". What I mean by that is perhaps best summed up by this example. Take the side of the map with the "infantry" bridge. You can only go forward to the enemy base via a narrow strip of land (sometimes very narrow).

I prefer maps with several options on how to attack the enemy positions, so really this is more a matter of personal preference. While you do have lots of room on each side where the players bases will be located, the no mans land leaves few tactical options other than charge forward "into the breach".

Cheers, Spook
