Three Kings - File Description

Description:
Three Kings is a Medium-large-sized ( 256 x 1024 ) map for Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War meant to be played by six players divided into two teams or by some number of players versus some number of computer-controlled opponents totalling six divided into two teams smile. Four critical objectives are all placed in the middle of the map, each denoting the securing of a vital dias in the mysterious castle-esque artifact that rises out of the whirling desert sands. Critical Objectives at each end of the map hint to players that one might want to watch their back when playing against extra sneaky oppositional forces. Sometimes you can win the battle but lose the war.

Bases start somewhere between the middle of the end of the map and the castle-esque artifact with strategic points both fore and aft of the base. Auto-Teams will team both short sides against each other. See the Map Icon in the game setup screen for base locations (it's really small because the map is so long, but you can get the general layout from a glance at the map).

There are a total of five relics on the map, two placed at the very back of each side of the map that protect the critical location and provide the rear guard for the bases. During team play, the three allies will have to choose which two get relics and which one takes the critical objective for fairness sake. If you play with AI teammates, make sure you get your fair share, because the AI is generally greedy when it comes to resource points (on the other hand, enemy AI will share and share alike, it's so unfair!). The lone relic that sits in the middle of the castle-esque artifact rising out of the shifting sands is up for grabs. It can be the third relic for the teammate who chooses to not take one of the two at the rear. It will be a point of contention throughout the game.

Control Points placed at strategic locations atop the ramps and below them help to secure the fortress. Personally, I think of control points figuratively, perhaps no more than simple communications stations that rest upon the sand having been orbital dropped just before the engagement from starships orbiting the planet where leaders see the battle only as blips on a vidscreen. They drop these points as references for their forces: Take these points and be rewarded. Lose them and we will abandon you to grisly deaths alone on an alien world facing your enemies without support, without hope. Do not fail us.

There is a rather odd thread in the Relic News Dawn of War Maproom forum where this map was discussed. If you want to read me having a nervous breakdown and more about why I like this map and hate it at the same time, point your browser there. ( http://forums.relicnews.com/showthread.php?t=52597 )

Suggest playing with Take & Hold (highly encouraged), Control Area (if you start losing here, start ordering bodybags) and Annihilate if you have to (I just don't like it, my personal opinion). Other game modes may or may not work very well in this setting such as Destroy HQ and Assassinate because each player's main base is not well-defended and attacks can come from any direction. Your only support is that which comes from your team mates and they'll be looking for the same from you.

Three Kings - Readme
Readme File:
"We landed in near sandstorm conditions with two other teams to secure that stronghold in this desolate hellhole. Just getting from point A to point B is hellish even without the Enemy sneaking up on you out of the dust that clogs everything from heavy bolters to the tracks on the Land Raiders. That's what makes Scouts so badass, we got the best flashlights."

-- From the journal of an unknown Scout

Blahblahblah Boringcakes!

Hiya!

OMGZ! This is like my third map! It's called Three Kings and the only thing it has to do with the movie is... well, not very much at all. There is sand.

If you follow the Relic News Dawn of War Maproom forum, you know how hard this map has been on my psyche. I want to thank everyone who encouraged, criticized, soothed, shouted and rolled their eyes at my behavior for hanging in there with me and following this through to what is (as I'm writing this) hopefully a release and a moving on to other things.

Which is not to say I am going to stop mapping. I'm just not going to go about it the way I went about producing Three Kings.

Strategy, Tactics and Other Liner Notes

Three Kings is a Medium-large-sized ( 256 x 1024 ) map for Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War meant to be played by six players divided into two teams or by some number of players versus some number of computer-controlled opponents totalling six divided into two teams :). Installation

I think I've managed to make a magical .zip archive that when unzipped into your main Dawn of War directory (the same folder where the W40K.exe and the W40k folder is kept) it will put all of the files into the correct folders (even creating them if they do not exist). I use many community-made detail textures and decals, which means you may already have them installed. You may be asked if you want to overwrite these files which you should be able to say yes or no to without effecting your installation at all. As far as I know, there is only one "official" version of these files and I got them directly from the source.

You shouldn't have any problem installing this as it's pretty much automated, but not an .exe file, so you could do it by hand if you wanted, just to make sure. It's been tested on several friends and nobody had a problem (except to ask if they should overwrite the textures and decals or not, which you can answer either yes or no to and you will get the same result). If you do have a problem, you can contact me and I'll try to help if I can. Contact information is at the end of this really incredibly long document.

I'd Like To Thank The Academy...

Which means I must credit the amazing Bill Brooks and the astounding monoRAIL ( http://www.cokane.com/ ) for thier beautiful work. If you've not done so yet, please consider downloading Sand Storm by monoRAIL ( http://dawnofwar.filefront.com/file/Sand_Storm;33987 ) and any maps that Bill Brooks may release in the future (as he has not released any yet, being too busy making amazing artwork for us to put in our maps). This release of Three Kings includes all three "packs" of Bill's stone and mountainside decals -- each and every one of them a work of art -- and of course, all of the textures and decals for monoRAIL's Sand Storm.

Any Last Words?

If you have any comments or constructive criticism, please send me ( Hanna ) an email or a private message through the Relic News forums ( http://forums.relicnews.com/ ) or you can contact me via the We Can't Tell Reality From Fantasy blog ( http://www.bitcheswithglitches.com/nwn/ ).

This map 'bout took all the fun out of mapping for me. I really can't handle criticism very well, constructive or otherwise. I have severe self-esteem problems and I mishandled the way I asked for input from people at random, rather than asking people individually. I'm not sure what my next project will be. We'll have to see about that. For now, I'm taking time off and just enjoying the game. I'm also making custom minimaps and map icons and loading screens for anyone who wants them done ( http://forums.relicnews.com/showthread.php?t=53170 ) to try to help anyone who doesn't know how to do this or just doesn't want to take the time.

Best wishes! Have Fun and Good Luck!

Love,

Hanna

 #3 - Nice map - Posted by: the_hunger (Member) on 10-13-2005 at 13:41
Well-detailed map with nice geography. It's a long map (256x512?), which feels very different from most maps. A lot of requision points and very good for 3v3 play.

=D awesome map and it's really different cause none of the other maps have the deserty sand that you map has I really like it. I know it wasn't made for DoW Soulstorm but I put it on Soulstorm and everything works but when you select a building to build you can't see the template thingy of the building before you place it and it doesn't let you place it even without seeing the template bit if you get me. If you or anyone knows how to solve this can you email me? boonyman@hotmail.co.uk overall I give this map a 10 because it's big it has good scenery and it's different.
