Mapping & Modding Help & Info |

This Page has been viewed 41,738 times Hey guys!
I just wanted to create a place where newbies looking for Mapping Advice can ask for help. I've created some tutorials for Mapping myself. Here they are:
First off, save maps to:
For DoW:"C: \Program Files\THQ\Dawn Of War\W40K\Data\Scenarios\MP"
For WA:"C: \Program Files\THQ\Dawn Of War\WXP\Data\Scenarios\MP"
For DC:"C: \Program Files\THQ\Dawn of War - Dark Crusade\DXP2\Data\Scenarios\MP"
Map Editors
WA RDN Tools V1.41
BETA DC RDN Tools v1.1
DC RDN Tools v1.2 on DoWFiles (Full Version)
DC RDN Tools v1.2 on Relic Forums (Full Version)
Please Note:
-The DC v1.1 Tools are BETA & hence may have a few bugs. It works on DC with the v1.1 patch or above. Once the full version becomes available it will be posted here on DoWFiles.
-The Full Version (v1.2) is now available (above)! It works on DC v1.2 only.
-Also, the maps created with the WA RDN Tools v1.41 also work in the original DoW (select DoW not WA before creating the map) & also in DC, provided you have both DoW & WA already installed on your comp.
Minimap(_mm)
In map Editor, set fog to 999-1000m (or click ctrl+f) & set sky radius to 512m (or click ctrl+k) & turn render sky off. Zoom way out & print screen (note: remember to undo the sky & fog changes if you save). Open Picture Editing software (Photoimpression, adobe photoshop etc.) & cut away all non-playable areas & place a black border around it to prevent the Minimap bleeding. Re-size the image to 256x256, rotate picture correctly (Check in-game to see the minimap's rotation) & save as a .tga over the file called "*mapname*_mm" in your MP folder.
Map Selection Pic(_icon)
Take your minimap picture and open it with Picture editing software (photoshop etc.). Write the start position numbers on the picture and then resize it to 128x128 & save as a .tga called "*Mapname*_icon" (it should save over the original) in your MP folder.
Loading Pic
For the loading screen you take a screen shot (press printScreen when in either ME or ingame).
Open that picture into an image program like Photoimpression or Photoshop and resize it to 800x600.
Then save it as a .tga and rename it the same as your map's .sgb file(eg: Kasr Angelis.sgb, save the loading pic as Kasr Angelis).
Then place it in the folder "C: \Program Files\THQ\....\MP\Loading" (if loading isn't already in your MP folder make it) & Start the map in-game & you should see your loading pic there.
Some Basics:
Heres some basics anyway:
-Open up Mission Editor.
-Click New Scenario & choose DoW/WA & then your map size. (512x512 is VERY big, Thats what I use for my 8 player maps. It can be quite tireing & time consuming doing a 1024x1024. 4 player maps do on 256x256 or for rectangle maps 256x512 or whatever)
-Click Overlay & then Terrain Type. The red boxes show the playable surfaces of the map. Place all objects in that & one box outside it just s oit doesnt look blank when you tilt the camera in-game. You need to see detail outside the map in-game too. To make it easier placing objects click Detail Map Edit & place a border around the playable area, so you know where to stop placing objects. Then use Detail Map Edit again to create the ground you wanna play on (urban/jungle etc.) Thisll be what the in-game ground looks like. Dont forget to change the border when youre finished the map, so it doesnt look out of place. You may now turn off the Overlay, but if you turn Overlay Impass Edit Map on, it makes it easier using hills & lacing objects.
-Use Heightmap Editor to make hills & ramps & stuff.
-Use Object Placement to place objects in-game. Set everything except race-specific buildings (turrets, armouries) & Starting Positions to World. Place Starting Positions where you want the different armies to start (Dont forget to assign it a PLAYER!!! Dont leave at World!). Place objects with left click. Rotate with right click. Shift & Right Click Raises/Lowers the object.
-Once everything is placed go into Terrain Type Editor, choose Cover & place cover if you want to.
-Go into Impass Map Editor & place Impassable around the sides & in every object placed (trees, urban buildings etc...) or else in-game units will walk right through them (I learned this the hard way!)! There is no need to place it around race-specific buildings (armouries, turrets etc.). You may also select Passable & cover hills over in Passable to allow units walk up steep hills.
-You can also place Decals for added detail. Click Decals & place the decal you want. Turn off Snap to 45degrees. Place with Left Click. Alter size with Shift & Right Click. Rotate with Shift & Left Click.
-Scenario Properties lets you name the mpa in-game (when youre choosing what map to select in-game) & also create a desc. of the map in-game.
-Terrain Properties lets you change the sky, alter fog & sky radius & change water colours.
Thats just the basics to get you going. It took me months & alot of map-making practice to come up with all that. Hopefully you'll pick up everything else as you progress like I did. Just make lots of practice maps & dont forget to test them! Alot of errors & bugs can be found by testing the maps. Just save it to your MP folder (place you save downloaded maps from the 'net) & play the game & the map.
All the above can be done with the WA RDN Tools v1.41 If you have your own ways of doing tha above or other suggestions, queries or tutorials please post them. Hope it helps.

(Note: There might be some typos in the above, as my shift key isn't working too well & I type pretty fast so some mistakes can be made. If there are any out of place "7"s, they probably should be "&".) |
