  Starship Troopers mod shows off renders - Mod News

The Starship Troopers mod has a couple new units to present today! The first the average Starship Troopers fan may not recognize.

It is the Wolf Pup unit, a sort of armored car used by the Troopers to fight bugs. The second one is more memorable. The Tanker bug! Both look very good, and it is nice to see some progress from the Starship Troopers mod.

Looks ace and looking forward to the a playable version. Out of interest can you make it as bloody as the film cause the film is so funny because its over the top, its like something out of Monty Pyton

The way they have done their polylayout's is outstanding... truly proffesional.
Just the right amount to look smooth, and just little enough to be a nice low-poly for RTS games. Nice.

Nice textures too.

Done in Maya you say... um if it was done in Maya it wont work with DoW as its build around 3Ds Max.

3Ds Max games are not compatible with Maya layout because of one primary reason.

3Ds Max's physics engine is built in a way that it requires to split each polygon into 2 triangles, this is known as a poly mesh, which is the main big let down for max... (the other being its nasty scripting engine that SUCKED up till version 6).

Now the reason why Max is preferred for games is simple, its models are more compatible and run smoother on Graphics cards as the mesh is already turned into 3 sided poly mesh which is the only type Graphic Cards can process in a video game (I don't know why but it has something to do with OpenGL or DirectX or other graphics plug-ins for games). While with Maya you have to convert the models to a poly mesh of 3 sided mesh objects rather than 4 sided polygons... which I might add is MESSY.

Just a little lession for those pretending to act like they know what they are talking about.

I was involved in a BF2 mod some time ago and they required 3DS Max to be used for the modeling, but our great modelers after some hunting on the net found a way to convert all the models that were made in Maya to 3DS max so all is not lost. They actually prefered Maya so thats why they took the time to do it that way and convert it.

Very nice work guys. Way to show the people what we can look forward too 10/10

Commander fox: Maya is in fact ok. What you need to do is send the files over to someone who has 3dsmax, then he/she can convert them into .3dsmax format. That way you can have maya models in dow.

We are going to be having the power suits and the roughnecks as soon as we find a coder(im working on it) well get the wolf pup and tanker into the game get a beta set up only for testing then after we find most of the bugs we will fix them then hopefully get a release to the public.

I never said I didn't like Maya, its just a bad system to build a game around as its hard to be compatible with most graphics cards, look at the Homeworld series for instance. I like Maya, its just its not the best platform for making game models according to my friends.

But if you can find a way to make it worth while then more power to you, I just like Max because its so easy to do low poly on it, but Maya dose render out 3D models based off 2D images better then Max dose.

Sorry about my rudeness... I'm used to seeing alot of random people who don't know anything about 3D design making stupid comments.

Maya is getting used more and more for game making. Look at Battlefield 2. Obviously a successful game, mainly uses Maya. However, you are right, Maya does come second to 3d Studio Max, at least in my opinion.

Grunt, you probably know you can't have any Dawn of War stuff in your release, but if you used Santos's tools, you could probably recycle animations from the guardsmen for the Roughnecks to save a lot of animating time...

I dont remember any "planes" in the movies or games I remember the transport ships I think they were called something boats we will have those and those "plans" your refuring(sp) too they are tactical bombers and they will be a commander ability I think.
